The Air Benders
The air benders in A:TLA were based on the monks living in Tibet, China. You can see this demonstrated through how the air benders live, where they live, and even with how they behave. They have vegetarian diets, isolate themselves from the world, and believe peace can always be the answer, much like the actual monks in Tibet. Behavior In the show, Aang is typically peaceful and always tries to find peaceful solutions to the problems he faces. This is blatantly obvious in the final season when it's time for him to defeat the fire lord, Ozai. He spends days trying to figure out how to stop him from taking over the entire world without killing him even though Ozai had taken over pretty much half of their entire world, killed his entire race, and was over all a horrible dictator. Aang also spent a lot of the show by having fun with his friends and continuing to help people no matter where he went which was similar to the way mission trips work with christian churches. Location of the temples The actual temples that the Tibetan monks live in are, naturally, in Tibet, China. The monk's temples are actually high up on the mountains and some are even built right into the sides of some mountains. Because they're air benders, it makes sense for them to settle in high up areas that are surrounded by nothing but air. Clothing In the show, the clothing varies depending on which nation you're from. For the air benders, no matter which temple they were from, they all had very loose breathable clothing. The older monks at the temples all wore long robes while the younger ones all wore long sleeved shirts and long pants. The colors were also yellow with orange accents. These concepts are actually very similar to the real Tibetan monks. The Tibetan monks also wear long robes, but unlike the show, the younger ones wear very similar attire.
